This is a form of interpretation in the spiritual sense of scripture and is more or less the opposite of the subjectivism you mentioned, all though in some ways the form appears similar. In fairness, I should say that I understand very much what you are driving at, and I wish my own thoughts were better formulated. <br />The Benedictine approach might be hard to mimic outside the cloister, a space in which the whole of the ritualized life is grounded in Scriptural mandates and allusions. It takes a certain amount of work for a 'scriptural culture' to be formed, and it takes vigilance for it to be maintained. <br /><br />The Ignatian approach is one with which I am familiar, having discerned for nearly a year with the Jesuits before entering the monastery. If I could make a comparison between the two approaches, I would say that the Benedictine presupposes a much more leisurely pace, in which memorization and constant meditation throughout the day play a large part, as does, as you intuited, the emphases and connections offered in the liturgy.<br /> The Ignatian approach, to a certain extent, is intended to move prayer from beginning to end, and to move the praying person into action.<br />That is a very short answer. I'd like to think about it more. I've written a good deal on lectio divina on my blog, if you are interested.<br />To save you from digging through, I can summarize a few points:<br />1) Begin and end reading scripture with an explicit prayer, invoking the help of the Holy Spirit.<br />2) Stay with the difficult parts; especially the ones that 'scandalize', that challenge our cultural presuppositions.<br />3)Memorize. You never know when a passage will suddenly take on new meaning in life; it is more likely to occur when we have more stored up in our minds.<br />4) Learn to read other types of literature joyfully. People who appreciate poetry, for example, will often appreciate Biblical turns of phrase that aren't easily illuminated by critical study.<br />5) Read the Bible often, even if it's just to read it through like a book. Not all the time, sometimes you have to pray, but again the more of the whole we know, the better our resources for understanding the parts.<br />6) Read the Fathers! Chrysostom and Origen are my favorites. I always learn something from them.<br /><br />Thanks for the opportunity to share, and again, I really appreciate this blog. I know of the Ignatian app...Thank you, Dom Peter! <br /><br />I know of the Ignatian approach which includes specific intentions of prayer, putting oneself in the Biblical scene with sensory imagination, and making a decision regarding the events contemplated. This approach can be found near the academy. <br /><br />I don't know much about the Benedictine approach — expect for the Psalms and readings in the Liturgy of Hours.
