President Obama addressed the nation tonight and spoke about restoring America’s economy and values.

However, over the last 3 years, he has made it clear that his values are not our values and he does not understand what it takes to make America great again.

Chuck Todd: The wild card is Santorum…His calculus is what? Newt’s gonna implode again because he’s never lasted more than 10 days as a frontrunner in most of his political life, right? That’s the stereotypical jab at Newt. When he’s up, he always shoots himself as he falls down. So the question Santorum is thinking is: ‘Great, they’re not gonna go to Mitt, I’ll hang here. This is how I won Iowa the first time.’ But does he spend his time on the debate stage making the case that he’s the real conservative, which then is a slight hit at Romney? Or does he spend some time going after Newt? So he’s sort of a wild card, I think, when watching this. But he, too, seems to only have one foot in Florida and that he wants to look for other places.

I have a very simple and straightforward question to ask.

Who do you trust to be the next President of the United States?

I know your answer isn’t Barack Obama. I’d suggest you can’t answer Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich, either.

You see, there are a lot of reasons to dislike President Obama’s policies. But there are three big issues which truly angered the conservative “Tea Party” voters -- and helped make real changes in Washington possible in the last election.

When Obama pushed “cap and trade” legislation which would crush American manufacturers by levying thousands of dollars in new fees on them, Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney played along. The Wall Street bailouts that forced taxpayers to sacrifice while bankers collected millions in bonuses got applause from Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney. And here’s the real kicker -- Obamacare was inspired by Romneycare and Newt Gingrich supported an “individual mandate” -- which is a fancy word for the government forcing you to buy something you may not want or need.

In my mind, these types of positions are unconstitutional. But obviously, not in theirs.

Everyone knows Mitt Romney has a big bank account. And everyone knows Newt Gingrich loves the spotlight and talks a good game.

But last night when I pressed these two gentlemen on how they can distinguish themselves from Barack Obama, all I got was hand-wringing and blank stares.

All the money in the world and the most “grandiose” speech can’t cover up the facts. And it can’t change history.

On the big issues, Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney are not all that different from Obama. That’s bad for two reasons.

First, I think the reason we are having these debates is because we want to replace Obama with someone different -- not just a carbon copy. And second, anybody who basically agrees with Obama will get destroyed by his campaign in November.

Obama’s political operatives are among the most skilled in the country. They will take every opportunity to point out that Gingrich and Romney agree with Obama on many issues. Conservatives, when given the choice between Obama and a nominee who agrees with him, will stay home. And that would be like forfeiting the election.

There are three reasons I am the best candidate to beat Barack Obama.

1) Unlike the other candidates, I offer a clear, contrasting vision of our nation when compared with Barack Obama.

2) Unlike the other candidates, I have actually run against -- and defeated -- a Democrat incumbent. Not once, not twice, but three times.

3) I know how to build coalitions with social conservatives and “Reagan Democrats” -- a crucial voting bloc critical to winning the White House.

Conservative voters don’t want a President who compromises on principles. They want someone who will be able to draw a clear distinction with Obama on national security, health care, and social issues. I’m the only one in this race who can -- and will -- do that.

I would disagree with Newt that he’s the conservative standard bearer. Newt's the guy that's a very high risk candidate. Not only is he wrong on the individual mandate, in other words government-mandated health insurance, which he supported for 20 years, he's wrong on the Wall Street bailout. He was wrong on global warming. He was wrong on the immigration issue. These are probably the four biggest issues the Tea Party has, which is really the conservative base of the Republican Party now. And Newt's just not in the right place on them.

George Jones Debate 2: The Lesser Angels of Our Nature

Recently, former President Jimmy Carter recently claimed that Newt Gingrich was using the "subtle" language of "racism" in his campaign. When asked by CNN's Peirs Morgan if he thought Newt was a racist, President Carter responded thusly:

“Newt Gingrich is probably as enlightened as I am about being gratified that we’re in the desegregation years in the South,” but “when you emphasize, over and over, welfare, food stamps, and ‘why don’t the black people get jobs,’ and if I’m president, I’ll make sure they turn toward a work ethic, rather than an ethic of welfare and food stamps, that’s appealing to the wrong element in South Carolina.”

President Carter is correct. Newt Gingrich has been subtly blowing his racist "dog whistle" throughout this campaign. His argument that inner-city school children should be required to work as janitors in order to obtain their free or reduced lunches is one such example. His pointedly patronizing and contemptuous attitude toward FOX News' Juan Williams is another example. Recently, at a South Carolina town hall meeting, a questioner thanked Newt for "putting Mr. Juan Williams in his place". Newt visibly flinched at the question--but did not correct her for using language that came straight out of the "Jim Crow Era" South. He repeatedly calls Obama "the food stamp president". Well, when you inherit the economy that 8 years of George W Bush resulted in, of course you are going to have a record number of people on food stamps.

My question is this. If Newt and his supporters truly wish to unite all Americans, why use the subtle language of the by-gone era of segregation?

"Jones", why are so many Republicans still unsure that their President is an American citizen? Why are so many Republicans convinced that President Obama is secretly a Kenyan Muslim...and a socialist? Is this why Newt is surging in both the South Carolina and National presidential polls? Why does the new Republican front-runner seem to be surging to the top of the pack? Is it the fact that he's reading from a script that could have been written by Strom Thurmond and the Dixie-Crats?

Why does Newt seem to be appealing to the "Lesser Angels of Our Nature"? And, why are so many Republicans thrilled by Newt's rhetoric?

Greetings--I'm the "George" of these "George Jones Debates". Thanks to my old pal for giving me the opportunity to once again correct his misguided thinking. I think I stand a pretty good chance, too. I converted "Jones" from a "Reagan-Fanatic" into a supporter of Bill Clinton in 1992. That being said...

"Jones" has asked me to defend the Obama Administration's recent determination that birth control be covered by Health Care Providers, employers, and (by extension) those who are employed by religious organizations. He suggests that it is immoral for people to be forced to "purchase" goods and services which violate their moral codes or their personal conscience. The simple fact is that government can and does require us to do certain things that we may not individually wish to do in order to promote the greater good of society as a whole.

Personally, I would love to have the opportunity to drive my car as fast as I wished through a "school zone". If I don't want to wear a seatbelt, it should be my right. Why does the government of my state mandate that I wear a motorcycle helment? Why am I required to pay for and maintain homeowner's insurance--or car insurance for that matter? Why should I pay income taxes? The answer is simple. It is in the best interest of the entire society if I obey traffic laws, maintain insurance, and pay my taxes.

Under the Affordable Care Act, birth control is viewed as "preventative medical care". This follows the same logic as why I'm required to carry car insurance. I am required to carry insurance for one simple reason. It's not to protect MY assets--it's to protect the assets of SOMEONE ELSE. If I cause an accident that "totals" an expensive luxury car, I will never be able to pay for the damages. However, since I carry insurance, those who have had their property damaged due to my negligence, are compensated for their loss. This decision by the Obama administration is similar. Women of all faiths have the right to be protected from "accidents".

If religious organizations had won their argument with the Obama Administration, as many as 2 million women (according to US Gov't) would have been denied equal access to birth control. That is simply not fair. The laws of this nation should apply equally to all of us. No one should be able to exempt themselves from governmental regulations. It's in the best interest of us all.

I first heard of Rick Santorum in the early fall of 1994. I happened to be at Longwood Gardens, in Delaware, for a weekend. I turned on a TV and heard this very scrappy, aggressive ad for Santorum’s Senate campaign in neighboring Pennsylvania. The signature line was: “Vote Santorum. Join the fight.” How could you not love that? It made me happy to know that he was joining our fight, and inviting others to come, too. It is really, really important that the Republican nominee — or a Republican president — always be conscious of the fact that everything he or she wants to do, wants to say, wants to convince the nation to understand and follow, will require a fight. A big, bloody, nasty fight, in which the other side will never give up, or cease questioning your motives, your sanity, your intelligence, and your grasp of “reality.” I feel very confident about him, because he is a scrapper by birth and training. Mitt Romney has been and is a life-long practicing Mormon. He has held a variety of leadership positions in his church. He is a serious Mormon, he is an active one. Therefore I feel is it appropriate to ask the following question. Why is Mitt a flip-flopper on issues like abortion?

I would argue it is this way because of his bad theology. Mormons do not believe that the soul enters the baby until birth. The baby in the womb is not fully human, he/she has no soul. In Mormon theology that counts for a lot because the soul exists prior to conception. That is why abortions or embryonic stem-cell research are both ethical and permitted in Mormon thinking...

On this day of Christmas the "center of history and the cosmos" became man. God Himself took on human flesh, that of the lineage of Abraham through Joseph in the womb of His mother, our mother, Mary. The meaning of the Incarnation is both deep and rich. A study of it will take a lifetime and even that will not reach the full depth of the profound implications of this mystery. Suffice it to say though that "Christ became man to teach man what it means to be human." Let us recognize on this day the historical fact that God became man. It is a fact which is troubling to the non-believer but beautiful to the believer. On this day let us spend time with the Lord, our family and our friends. Let us see the traces of Him in all those that we encounter. It is through Him that we will find any lasting peace and joy, in both this world and in the next to come.

15th November, the feast of St Albert the Great, patron of scientists, saw the launch of the new (free) online review HUMANUM: Issues in Family, Culture, and Science, edited by Stratford Caldecott for the John Paul II Institute in Washington. It is all about “the human”: what makes us human, what keeps us human, and how to rescue our humanity when this is endangered. Our aim is to pick our way with discernment through the flood of publications (some good, some confused, some pernicious) that claim to tell us about ourselves, about family, marriage, love, children, health, and human life.
Humanum has a particular concern with issues that directly affect the poor and the vulnerable in our society. Each issue will have a main theme around which the reviews and articles cluster, and we begin with an issue on THE CHILD, because this reveals the foundation of our perspective on humanity: the child is the purest revelation of man and his relationship to Being. The lead article is a major piece by the Editor of Communio, Prof. David L. Schindler, which goes right to the heart of our present cultural malaise.

The Center for Cultural and Pastoral Research, a recently founded subsidiary of the American session of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family, is launching its new online review Humanum in November 2011.

This free quarterly journal is one of several expressions of the Center's effort to bring sustained anthropological and theological reflection to the pressing cultural issues of our time, particularly as these affect children and the most vulnerable members of society, including the aged and infirm.

Humanum will engage contemporary themes – childhood, bioethics, education, work, issues concerning ecology, medicine, health, and so on – through major articles and also reviews of important and influential books.

The theme of the first issue is The Child – the first and purest expression of what it is to be human. After that, we begin a four-issue cycle on "Recovering Origins," looking at the ways in which the origin of the child in marriage may be compromised by divorce, artificial reproduction, same-sex unions, and delinquent fatherhood. In each case we want to offer a Christian reflection on human experience.

Humanum is offered as a free service to researchers and students in the social sciences, medicine, and theology, as well as to pastoral and health-care workers, catechists, parents, teachers, and anyone concerned with the renewal of a culture of life in our time.
