Scandal at "America" from The Editors

"Those calling for the strict regulation of Catholic discourse argue that public dissent from church doctrine creates scandal, confusing or misleading the 'simple faithful.' What really gives scandal to people in the pews, however, is the arbitrary and self-serving exercise of ecclesiastical authority. What the CDF has done to Thomas Reese and America is the scandal. Is it possible that not one bishop has the courage to say so? That too is a scandal."

The New Pope: An Orthodox View by John Garvey

The attitude of both John Paul II and Benedict XVI toward other religions has long been appreciated by non-Catholics. "But in the attitudes of both men toward internal Catholic matters there is something many Orthodox find a bit disturbing."

Re: Reece. Perhaps the more realistic solution would be to laicize America. But perhaps the Jesuits rejected this solution . . .

I think it confuses the issue when this whole ordeal is portrayed as a move by the Vatican to silence voices in the Church. The real problem here is that America has the rep of being an official voice because it's the Jesuit magazine of note... and all the media turn to it for "the American Catholic" view and take on things. It really has set itself up as a spokesman for the Church and it's no such thing.

I'm all for dialogue... but that's not what the editorial problem at America is. It's an instance of a masquerade...that's my two cents! I suppose someone will offer me change. :)
