The article was a rant. The letter was better. By the way, how many Orthodox talk about the Church's need to breathe with both lungs?
Fred,
Yes I agree his article was a "rant." As I stated in my comments of their post, Schaeffer is better than that.
There is a strain of Eastern Orthodox who reject all ecumenism (i.e. ROCOR, old calendar orthodox, etc.), but most reasonable Orthodox recognize the importance of the Bishop of Rome. As you know though, this is a very complicated issue.
The Catholic church has made a sweeping effort to speak more charitably of the Orthodox (for contrast, see the Catholic Encyclopedia of 1913, online). But, then, the Catholic church can move more dramatically on such issues.
I've asked Carl and Mark to publish an article on this topic. Let us see if this happens. There has been a pretty extensive dialog in the comments on both of these posts.
As an Eastern Catholic, I feel a strong affinity and affection for the Orthodox Church and hope that some form of reconcilliation between the two churches will occur. Sadly, as David stated, many in the Orthodox who are strongly opposed to that.
Sadly, Ive lately been effected deeply by this tendency. :(
