James A. W. Heffernan (Ph.D., Princeton University) is Emeritus Professor of English at Dartmouth College, where he was also Frederick Sessions Beebe '35 Professor in the Art of Writing. Dr. Heffernan chaired the Dartmouth English Department from 1978 to 1981 and taught a range of courses including European Romanticism, English Romantic poetry, methods of literary criticism, and the 19th-Century English novel. For many years he also taught a senior seminar on Joyce’s Ulysses that was regularly oversubscribed. He is author of several books and more than 50 articles.
