During the Meeting in Rimini, talking about the great exhibit they had on "Libertas Ecclessia," I had an interesting conversation with a CL priest from Venice who told me, "There is no such thing as a 'Christian' state. There never has been. El estado es laico." I'm not quite sure how to translate that last sentence--what would be English for "laico"? "The State is Lay" sounds a bit wierd.

Hmm. Would this suggest that laity are not Christian, but only the priests are? Guilds are lay, but were the expression of Christian faith . . .
