Wow! It's great to see Fr. Ong, SJ's comments on this piece. I've had the pleasure of meeting Fr. Ong more than once.
I have long wondered why faithfulness does not seem to be a requirement for employment in the lay ministries of the Church. McCarraher gives us an answer--those concered primarily with faithfulness do not bring expertise to the table.
The "theraputic agora" has no place for the one who points to the unknown Goad and says,
"we ought not to think that the divinity is like an image fashioned from gold, silver, or stone by human art and imagination"
That might be "psychologically harmful" or even (gasp) Bad for Business.
