This blog explores both historical and current events guided by the thought of the leading thinkers, past and present, of this school or movement of theology. Refer to the Classic Posts, Great and Contemporary Thinkers, various links of all kinds, in addition to the Archives themselves. David, do you endorse the views of Carville & Begala?
Wow, is that a loaded question or what? I would dear say that you yourself endorse the very reasonable views of Carville & Begala as expressed in this work. I'll give you a few seconds to stop coughing up your breakfast burrito. Let me explain. I apologize for any heartburn that I might have caused. As your friend I am deeply concerned about your health, well-being, and education towards a happy life.
1. Carville & Begala endorse the 95-10 Initiative of the Democrats for Life.
An important excerpt from their work on this topic is as follows.
A group of pro-life Democrats called, appropriately enough, Democrats for Life, has come up with what it calls the 95-10 Initiative. Its goal is to reduce abortions by 95 percent in ten years. The 95-10 Initiative has been championed in the House of Representatives by Tim Ryan, a bright and engaging congressman from Ohio. One of the youngest members of Congress, Ryan was fed up with extremists on both sides who endlessly debated Roe v. Wade without doing anything constructive to reduce the need for or number of abortions. The 95-10 Initiative is built around seventeen concrete policy proposals that would reduce the number of abortions. In announcing their plan, the pro-life Democrats said their goals are to empower women, to defend pregnant women, and to protect unborn children... Democrats should challenge Republicans who do nothing more than give lip service to pro-lifers to put some policy behind their speeches. This is both good politics, and we think, good policy.
2. On Iraq, Carville & Begala state that we must win the war and respect the military.
3. On gun control, Carville & Begala believe we must respect gun owners rights and enforce the laws already on the books.
4. On energy, Carville & Begala push for independence on oil from foreign providers. They promote an energy plan, which centers on conservation and environmental remediation by making a "real commitment to alternative fuels." President Bush proposed exactly this last night at his State of the Union address.
5. Additionally, President Bush endorses the thought of Carville & Begala regarding health care. They argue for allowing employers to buy into a portable health program, i.e. the Federal Employees Health Benefit Program, which offers 180 different plans to 9 million government employees.
So my friend, where do you stand on these issues? With or against Carville & Begala?
:-) And hence the occasional necessity to judge a cover by its contents instead of its cover (or in this case, authors).
My reaction was based on articles and transcripts, etc. I've read by both men, which haven't left me impressed.
Guess I might have to reconsider.
Anything that moves the Dems to the center is a good thing, especially on the life issue.
James Carville is the Karl Rove of the Democratic Party. The problem though was that Kerry refused to listen to him and we all know the results. He lost.
The real legacy of Bush will not be Iraq, but Roberts & Alito. They looked very good in those robes last night. Did anyone notice that they were all Catholics? Let us thank Our Lady.
"Elections have consequences", as Fr. Pavone (Priests for Life) put it.
One can only imagine Kerry's choice of nominees, had he been elected.
Obviously agreed, Christopher.
But in David's defense, I don't think he meant that as a post-facto endorsement of Kerry... I'm pretty sure he voted for for President Bush.
