American Liberal / Progressive Catholicism Lived a Short Life and Died in 1979...
A very interesting take by TRC, whose writing I'd not seen until discovering this site a few weeks ago. I'd date the death of progressivist Catholicism a little differently, though: the 1985 Synod when the important eclessiological questions were settled. As to the fate of "conservative" Catholicism, it's first sign of passing Neuhaus' project of Evangelicals and Catholics Together, always the insidious and ad extra seed of a so-called "moral ecumenism" with unmistakable partisan overtones. It's last breath, Neuhaus' failure to condemn the Bush stem-cell outrage in 2001. I understand that he now experiences visions. One wonders if the content of any concerned the treatment of the remains of the victims gassed at Auschwitz.
