Jean Vanier on Depression - A Zenit News Agency Interview
We are all subject to depression. We are all capable of entering the world of despair. Bernanos says that to find hope one must go down to the abyss of despair...It is not at all mental disability. A depressed person is what I would call "disabled by distress." Depression is an illness of distress, of energy. So the danger is to hide behind the television, to take refuge in alcohol, in drugs, to look for something new instead of looking within oneself. And this is the tragedy!
Breaking through, not breaking down
The Identity Crisis in Catholic Schools by Deacon Keith Fournier
Education is not something the Church adds something to, as though the process of educating were some kind of nakedly secular pursuit which we somehow make "religious". Rather, education is the very heart and core of the Churches’ mission. In his masterful letter to the Romans, the Apostle Paul calls all Christians to a "…renewal of their minds". (Romans 12:2) This renewal of the mind is the essence of Catholic education. In speaking of herself, the Church often notes that she is an "expert in humanity" who "walks the way of the person".

Pope: No Structural Adjustment Stipulated on Foreign Debt by Mark and Louise Zwick
The concurrent rapid development of the ... outsourcing system for cheap labor in poor countries with no provision for payment of local taxes and strict enforcement against labor organizing has created miserable working conditions and under subsistence pay for poor workers--who often were forced to migrate. It is our hope that the Compendium of the Social Teaching of the Church will be amended to include the Holy Father's teaching regarding debt repayment and forgiveness.

Hans Urs von Balthasar On the Ordination of Women
"[The Church] cannot change herself at will but must accept herself the way she was born"
It should fill a woman with elation to know that she is the privileged place where God is able and willing to be received into this world. The primary instance here is Mary, Virgin and Mother. But there exists an inner continuity between the singular Incarnation of God's Word in Mary, and his constantly renewed advent in the receiving Church.

Dialogue Must be Reciprocal If It Is To Be Meaningful by Stephen Hand
Real tolerance and dialogue presuppose that we have all learned from the mistakes of the past, even as we seek new ways to promote a more humane culture, a culture of life and freedom from fear, as opposed to a culture of death and terror. We call on Muslims and the political Left to make dialogue a two way street, lest what appears to be tolerance turns out to be just more fanatical tyranny in the end.

God and Comparative Religion by G.K. Chesterton
It is in a saying I once heard from some Hindu tradition; that gods as well as men are only the dreams of Brahma; and will perish when Brahma wakes. There is indeed in such an image something of the soul of Asia which is less sane than the soul of Christendom. We should call it despair, even if they would call it peace.

The Problem of Religious Liberty:A New Proposal by Thomas Storck
Usually the supposed contradiction in Church teaching on religious liberty is seen as a conflict between earlier papal teaching and Dignitatis Humanae. But if the text of Dignitatis Humanae is taken seriously this is not so. Dignitatis Humanae states, as I quoted above, that it "leaves intact the traditional Catholic teaching on the moral duty of . . . societies toward the true religion and the one Church of Christ."

To Surge or not to Surge: That is the Question by Dr. John P. Hubert
The so-called "surge" option, escalation, troop reinforcement or whatever other euphemism one chooses to employ, is based upon the assumption that it is still possible to pacify Iraq and upon achieving it, a political settlement of sectarian difference will be reached. This contention defies logical analysis. If only it were true.
