In the July 2 issue of The New Republic, Alan Wolfe reviews the ISI Books' anthology The Essential Russell Kirk: Selected Essays. In the review, Wolfe examines Kirk's famous canons of conservative thought. Most interesting to our readers will be Wolfe's treatment of Kirk's assertion that conservatism demands a transcendent religious and moral order. Wolfe asks whether Kirk's Christian order was Catholic (as Kirk was) or whether it was closer to evangelical Protestantism or some other form of conservative Christianity. In the end, Wolfe decides Kirk was about as Christian as the Pledge of Allegiance.
I dunno. According to Wolfe's standards, I think that a few of us could wonder if he would find us Catholic...

Eric Scheske offers a more sober account of Kirk's Catholicism.
