English Missionary Efforts

"Between 1736 and 1739 they established Stockbridge, a town for Mahicans that also included four English (New Englander) families. The idea was that Indians might be more effectively evangelized if they learned to live with the English and according to English principles. Civilizing, it was believed, should go hand in hand with evangelizing"

Marsden, Jonathan Edwards: a Life 375-376.

"Closely following the missionaries were settlers who, even if sympathetic to the mission, had stronger interests in their own lands, their economic opportunities, and the security of their expanding families"
(378-379).
