"However, there are undeniable literary parallels in opening chapters of the Gospel of Luke wherein Mary appears in narratives paralleling Eve, the Ark, and the Temple, so what you find in these early theologians does not appear out of thin air." ~ Boar's Head TavernHmm. I never really thought about Lucan narrative paralleling Mary with Eve, the Ark, and the Temple, but those are parallels that I think of in connection with Revelations... ah well, nobody every claimed that typology was an exact science!
I also found this bit somewhat interesting if puzzling: "Luke fails to show Mary in a matronly over the Church or as a key mediator between Christians and Jesus."
Personally, I prefer Dante's description of Mary the best: "the fixed term of the eternal counsel." The point at which Jesus is anchored to humanity. That about says it all for me. It also explains how quickly Jesus becomes reduced to an abstract concept as soon as His mother is forgotten...
Reading the post linked above, I thought again a bit about the image of pregnant Mary stepping on the head of the serpent (flawed translation ...long story). Maybe we could do justice to the image and translation if we realize that it was Jesus that made her foot just heavy enough to crush that reptillian skull ;)
