"they observed that some of his disciples ate their meals
with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands.
—For the Pharisees and, in fact, all Jews,
do not eat without carefully washing their hands" (Mark 7:1ff)
The Pharisees notice something about some of Jesus's disciples that we tend to overlook. If all the Jews wash their hands before eating and some of Jesus's disciples didn't... that would indicate that some of the disciples were the most nominal of Jews, who had very little concern for ritual purity. It also indicates that Jesus wasn't concerned about it either. Most of the disciples did wash their hands and continued to follow a man who accepted as disciples some who didn't. Who is this man who says follow me not the traditions of men?

And to make things more complicated, God (which included the Son) killed Uzzah for touching the ark of the covenant with his hands in an effort to prevent it from falling.....raising the question...where does epikeia begin and end?
