A Pilgrim People - the Harlot Church

"Casta Meretrix: The Church as Harlot"
http://www.wquercus.com/faith/casta_meretrix.htm
The above article by Bill Cork (apparently written during his Catholic period) summarizes some points from Balthasar's essay, "Casta Meretrix." The strongest point for me from the original essay is that those who separate from sinners to form a pure community put themselves outside the house of Rahab, and thus, also, outside the Church.

A good reminder, I always thought Cork's writings on that site interesting because his reasons for reverting to Adventism seemed to me very unconvincing (like merely saying Von Balthasar was a pagan because he used Tarot cards, etc).

I read the Meditations on the Tarot book before I read Balthasar. Neither the author nor Balthasar advocate divination using tarot cards. That book is by an author who had long been involved with hermetic philosophy but had converted to Catholicism. He saw Christ as the answer to his whole life of striving and expressed this in the form of a personal synthesis. He says a couple of things that are odd but overall he has a good heart. That author is attempting like St. Jerome etc to despoil the pagans of their treasures. He's not completely successful, but his task is valid for a Christian.

It was actually written in the period during and immediately after his reversion to Seventh-day Adventism. He often cites this essay to justify his own belief in the Catholic Church being the Whore of Babylon, supposing that Von Balthasar believed the same thing, even though Von Balthasar's meaning is quite different -- Though any comment pointing this out to him on his blog will promptly be deleted or severely edited to make you look like a fool.

Von Balthasar definitely did not use Tarot Cards for divination.

Thanks for the history: it's clear that logic is but a part of folks's journey... Here's the irony... outside the Church, which is the house of Rahab, no salvation. If you seek a church that is pure without sinners you will end up wandering outside every communion.
